This is the official home page of U D E

The UDE-Project is creating a new WM which will be a complete GUI in future. The project does not use any special GUI-Libraries such as QT or GTK+. We just use the standard Xlibs (both to keep UDE fast and slim and to avoid dependencies). UDE has a completely original Look'n'Feel, it's not just another copy of the so well known "classical" window management user interface.

UDE - Get used to it!

I just released a 0.2.10a which is a minor bugfix release for the build system of 0.2.10. Upgrade if you experienced trouble with 0.2.10 or if you are interested in a minor gain in performance on some systems.

Fri, 18 Aug 2006 20:26:09 GMT CVS to SVN conversion and new development strategy
Due to the recent wave of interest in uwm I have decided to try to work on uwm on a more regular basis again. Since I very probably still won't have the time for major improvements, I'll resurrect the 0.2 branch and limit myself to incremental improvements and some backports from 0.3.

I have also moved the source code from cvs to svn which is definitely the better tool imho and i'll post another news item and instructions on how to access the repository as soon as I have tested the database more thoroughly.

greetings,
christian

Wed, 06 Jul 2005 21:35:12 GMT Thank You!
This is just a quick thank you message to all supporters of the anti software patent protests in Europe. Thanks to you the European parliament decided today to entirely reject the european council of minister's "compromise" proposal which would have very much legalized sofware patents in Europe. Although a directive clearly rejecting software patents would have had even better effects in the short term, the decision means a victory for SMEs, independent developers, open source software and last but not least the EU's democratic process.

Recent tendencies are calling for an even broader reform of patent system in general, both in the US and in Europe. Let's hope they'll join forces and bring us internationally accepted regulations that are both elegant and sensible as well as beneficial to everyone from the Megacorporation over the one-man-company doing highly specialized custom projects to open source projects like this one, from Telecom Operators to fertilizer manufacturers, from the US and Europe to Namibia. A man can dream... but let's stay alert and ready for the occasional wave of support or protest when needed. The european example has shown that we _can_ change the world (and are already doing it).

I would also like to apologize to those who are not interested in patents and had the impression that this site recently was rather a political platform than a site about ude. I am well aware that's not what this site is supposed to be and I never wanted this project to turn political. It is my personal opinion, however, that in this case an exception is justified by the pure fact that this particular political decision could have had a great impact on this project.

Finally an update about the technical part: I'm still working on ude 0.3 but my professional life has been extremely time-consuming in the last years. I'm still committed to bringing 0.3 out the door sooner or later. The exact timeline depends on the amount of time I can invest (and potential help from yet-to-become project members ;)

Greetings,
Christian
